Gestern übergab ein Ehepaar einige Dokumente, darunter auch ein Primizbild. Eine Erinnerung an die erste Heilige Messe – die Primiz – des Lambacher Mönches P. Benno Mayr OSB.
Heute vor 155 Jahren, am 2. November 1870 feierte P. Benno diesen Gottesdienst in der Basilika St. Paul vor den Mauern diesen Gottesdienst; anders als im Professbuch in der Kurzbiographie steht. St. Paul vor den Mauern ist auch der Sitz der gleichnamigen Abtei am Garb des Heiligen Paulus. Damals war St. Paul auch Brennpunkt für deutschsprachige Benediktiner, die dort im Geiste der Ordensreform studierten.
P. Benno war nicht nur als Seelsorger und Ökonom im Stift tätig. Mit seinem caritativem Engagement gründete er eine Suppenanstalt, vergleichbar mit der heutigen Tafel. Auch kulturell engagierte er sich.

Today we celebrate All Souls’ Day and remember our dear departed.
Yesterday, a married couple gave me several documents, among them a Primizbild—a remembrance of the first Holy Mass (Primiz) of the Lambach monk Father Benno Mayr, OSB.
Exactly 155 years ago today, on November 2, 1870, Father Benno celebrated this Mass in the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls—contrary to what is stated in the short biography in the profession book. St. Paul Outside the Walls is also the seat of the abbey of the same name, built over the tomb of Saint Paul. At that time, St. Paul’s was also a focal point for German-speaking Benedictines who studied there in the spirit of monastic reform.
Father Benno was active in the abbey not only as a pastor and steward but also through his charitable work: he founded a soup kitchen, comparable to today’s food banks. He was also involved in cultural activities.
